What do old out-of-print board games, The letter 'R', and a painter named Pip all have in common?
As usual on these projects I start with sketches until an idea strikes... many are ugly... or dumb... or silly. The dumber and sillier the better. Like the above sketch of a 'what if there was this old dice shack that needed restoring". And then work it until it becomes something that works on a basic level - small and large.
So the logo is done! It's all snazzy and pretty. But we can't stop there. The logo needs a dress for the night out... or rather a trade-dress. How does it work in color? How does it work on a box? How about a slogan? Where does that go? How does it work over busy backgrounds?
Time to take a deeper dive into color studies and typographic solutions beyond just the logo.
The final test is making sure it all works in the real world. On the package with other illustrations and sub-brands. Illustrations by Tavis Coburn.
